Greensboro, N.C.--Duke's First Varsity Eight Crew, which posted three strong finishes in winning each of its three races at last weekend's Knecht Cup, was named the ACC Rowing Crew of the Week by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday.
Duke's crew is composed of coxswain Caroline Kiritsy (West Roxbury, Mass.), Kathy Smithwick (Louisville, Ky.), Katie Burke (Lutz, Fla.), Emily Theys (Stoughton, Wis.), Rory Erickson-Kulas (Naugatuck, Conn.), Tara Dalton (Woodlands, Texas), Laura Sciarrino (Buffalo, N.Y.), Grace Cassidy (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Claire Vannelli (London, Ontario, Canada).
The Blue Devils captured their first heat at the Knecht Cup in a time of 6:40.06, downing Holy Cross, Rutgers, Colgate and Fordham on the Cooper River outside of Camden, N.J. Duke came back to win their semifinal race as well, in a time of 6:32.85, besting teams from Boston College, Drexel, George Mason, New Hampshire and Connecticut. Lastly, the Blue Devil crew took the Grand Final in a time of 6:25.69, their second-fastest this spring, defeating teams from Boston College, Bucknell, Buffalo, Wisconsin and Dayton in the process.
Duke's First varsity Eight crew will enter this Saturday's ACC Rowing Championships seeded second in the First Varsity Eight only to nationally No. 1-ranked Virginia. The 13th ACC Rowing Championships will be held Saturday morning, beginning at 9 a.m., on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. and will be video streamed live by USRowing and TheACC.com.
