GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke’s First Varsity Eight was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Crew of the Week for the first time this year, after defeating a strong field in the Grand Finale of the First Varsity Eight competition at the annual Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
The honor for the Blue Devils marked the first ACC Crew of the Week Award for Duke in Rowing since March 19 of 2007.
The Blue Devils’ First Varsity Eight crew posted a time of 6:34.44 to best crews from Buffalo (6:39.13), Temple (6:40.57), Drexel (6:40.72), Rutgers (6:46.95) and Boston College (6:55.39) in the Grand Finale. In all, Duke outdistanced 17 other schools in the First Varsity 8 competition at the Knecht Cup.
The First Varsity Eight crew of Duke is composed of coxswain Justine Hong (Hillsborough, Calif.), Emily Theys (Stoughton, Wis.), Rory-Erickson-Kulas (Naugatuck, Conn.), Alex Japhet (Everett, Wash.), Laura Sciarrino (Buffalo, N.Y.), Kathy Smithwick (Louisville, Ky.), Kathryn Lowry (Wall, N.J.), Stephanie Rosser (Newton, Mass.) and Carolina Fox (Rosemount, Pa.).
All of the members of the crew, except Japhet, a 2008 All-ACC rower, are freshmen and sophomores.
In winning the ACC Crew of the Week honors, Duke’s First Varsity Eight crew edged the Second Varsity Eight crew of Clemson which defeated both 15th-ranked UCLA and 8th-ranked Southern California this past Saturday in dual meet competition in Los Angeles, Calif.
Both Duke and Clemson will not compete this week as they prepare for this year’s 2010 ACC Rowing Championships which will be held on Saturday, April 24th on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
