GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia’s First Varsity Eight was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Crew of the Week for the second straight week Tuesday, defeating a pair of nationally ranked teams this past Saturday on Lake Monticello near Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers’ First Varsity Eight crew—ranked second nationally in the latest national poll by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association—posted a time of 6:32.5 to best 10th-ranked Michigan (6:41.1) on Saturday morning. Virginia’s 1V8+ boat then posted a time of 6:46.7 in the afternoon session to defeat the 12th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (6:59.8).
The wins for Virginia’s crew gives it triumphs over five nationally-ranked teams in its last two meets.
The First Varsity Eight crew of Virginia is composed of coxswain Sidney Thorsten (Atlanta, Ga.), Jennifer Cromwell (Bellevue, Wash.), Summers Nelson (Kansas City, Mo.), Desiree Burns (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Katrin Reinert (Stuttgart, Germany), Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), Kristine O'Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), Nora Phillips (Arlington, Va.) and Helen Tompkins (Friendswood, Tex.)
The First Varsity Eight crew for Virginia edged out the First Varsity Four crew of Clemson for the ACC Crew of the Week honors. Clemson’s First Varsity Four defeated both Michigan and Ohio State over the weekend and the Tigers’ crew features three members from last year’s NCAA National Championship boat in coxswain Meredith Razzolini (Roswell, Ga.), Alison Colberg (Six Mile, S.C.) and Callen Erdecky (Bowie, Md.).
This year’s 2010 ACC Rowing Championships will be held on Saturday, April 24th on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
