Greensboro, N.C.-- Virginia’s First Varsity Four crew which captured the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, which goes to the winner of the Women’s Collegiate Varsity Four title in the San Diego Crew Classic, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week Wednesday by the ACC.
The 1V4+ crew, consisting of junior coxswain Molly Frear (Wilton, Conn.), senior Ruth Retzinger (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Kaity McCullough (Campbell, Calif.), sophomore Elle Murray (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Chandler Lally (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), recorded a time of 7:58.12, in defeating 14th-ranked Washington State (8:02.23), UCLA (8:05.35), Tennessee (8:08.98), 6th-ranked Southern California (8:11.79) and 8th-ranked Washington (8:17.17) in the Grand Final last Sunday.
On Saturday, the same crew captured its semifinal heat in a time of 7:37.64, besting UCLA, British Columbia, Clemson, Southern Cal “B”, Oklahoma and San Diego State to reach the Grand Finals.
The win by the Cavaliers 1V4+ was one of three strong performances by Virginia on Sunday as its First Varsity Eight crew finished second to Southern California by less than three seconds, and its Second Varsity Eight finished third, just behind UCLA and Washington.
Virginia has been ranked No. 1 nationally in each of the first three CRCA polls of the year, marking their 48th consecutive appearance in the national polls and their 7th No. 1 ranking.
Virginia will next be in action this April 14-15 against 15th-ranked Michigan State, 16th-rated Cornell, 18th-ranked Notre Dame and Northeastern in dual meets on Lake Monticello just outside of Charlottesville, Va.
The the 2012 ACC Rowing Championship will be held on Saturday, April 21, on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
