Greensboro, N.C.--Virginia’s Second Varsity 8+ boat was named the inaugural 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Crew of the Week presented by Chevrolet after posting a pair of impressive wins this weekend against 3rd-ranked California and 4th-ranked Stanford at Redwood Shores, California.
The meet was the first of the year for Virginia which captured the 2010 NCAA National Rowing Championships and was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the first Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) poll of the year.
The Cavalier crew of coxswain Molly Frear (Wilton, Conn.), MacKenzie Leahy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), Carli Goldberg (Sarasota, Fla.), Carolyn Glandorf (Boston, Mass.), Jenny Shultis (Lexington, Va.), Morgan Joseph (Ellicott City, Md.), Brandy Herald (Portland, Ore.), Cara Linnenkohl (Redmond, Wash.) and Hunter Terry (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated 4th-ranked Stanford on Saturday, posting a time of 6:42.1 to a 6:46.9 clocking by the Cardinal.
UVa’s Second Varsity 8+ then posted Virginia’s only win on Sunday against 3rd-ranked California, besting the Golden Bears’ boat by more than eight seconds, recording a time of 6:40.1 to a 6:48.5 time for Cal.
Virginia’s crew earned the honors over Clemson’s First Varsity 8 crew which captured a seven-team race at Lake Hartwell on March 19 with a time of 6:39.85, besting teams from Indiana, Alabama, Boston University, Syracuse, Purdue and Marist.
The 2011 ACC Rowing Championships will be held on Saturday, April 23, on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
