Greensboro, N.C.-- Virginia’s First Varsity Eight crew which won three races last weekend at the Oak Ridge Invite, downing 18th-ranked Tennessee, Duke, Minnesota, Louisville and Jacksonville, was named the initial 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week Wednesday.
The 1V8+ crew, consisting of Coxswain Sidney Thorsten (Atlanta, Ga.), Keziah Bell (Bainbridge, Island, Wash.), Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), Kristine O’Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), Sarah Cowburn (Reddicth, England), Brandy Herald (Portland, Ore.), Susanne Grainger (London, Ontario, Canada), Morgan Joseph (Ellicott City, Md.) and Kaitlin Fanikos (Boston, Mass.), downed the 18th-ranked Volunteers, posting a time of 6:22.60, to defeat Tennessee by more than 18 seconds (6:40.94).
The Cavaliers, coached by Kevin Sauer, then came back to post a better time (6:18.10) in defeating Louisville and Jacksonville. UVa then posted its best time of the weekend on Sunday, turning in an impressive 6:14.50 in downing Duke and Minnesota.
Virginia is currently ranked as the nation’s No 1 rowing team in the most recent poll released on March 15 by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA)
The 2012 ACC Rowing Championships will be held on Saturday, April 21, on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
