Greensboro, N.C. - Maryland junior defender Iliana Sanza has been named the ACC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year. The Cockeysville, Md. native started all 20 games for the nation's fourth-ranked defense. Sanza led the Terrapins with 36 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers while her 32 draw controls were the third most of any Terrapin. Against ACC opponents, Sanza tallied 11 ground balls, 10 draw controls, and 11 caused turnovers.
The Inside Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-American was named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. Sanza also earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week preceding February 21st and was named to the ACC Championship All-Tournament Team following her performances that led Maryland to the ACC title.
Last Friday, teammate Katie Schwarzmann was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Terrapin Coach Cathy Reese was named ACC Coach of the Year. Covie Stanwick of Boston College earned Freshman of the Year honors.
Maryland (17-3) earned the third seed in the upcoming NCAA Championship and will face-off against Massachusetts (19-1) in first-round action, Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m. at the Terrapins' Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
