North Carolina's Laura Zimmerman Earns Final 2010 Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week

April 19, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina sophomore attacker Laura Zimmerman was named the final 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 18. Zimmerman set career-highs with five goals and seven points in Carolina’s 18-16 win at top-ranked Northwestern.

Zimmerman, who earns her first 2010 weekly nod and second for UNC, helped the second-ranked Tar Heels hand the Northwestern Wildcats their first loss in 42 games and first at home (Lakeside Field) in 59 contests. In fact, Northwestern hadn't lost a game in nearly two years, since a loss to Penn on April 27, 2008.

The sophomore from Syracuse, N.Y., scored a goal with two seconds left in the first half to tie the game (12-12) at the break, then scored the game-winner in the second half while adding a draw control and a caused turnover. Zimmerman also had a goal, an assist, a ground ball and a draw control in Wednesday’s win over fourth-ranked and league foe Duke, assisting on the game-winner.

The pair of wins improved Carolina to 13-1 this season, a mark that currently boasts a seven-game win streak. The Tar Heels earned the top seed in next weekend’s ACC Championship, which will be held April 22, 23 and 25, on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park. UNC has a bye to Friday’s semifinal round and will face the winner of No. 4 seed Duke and No. 5 seed Boston College on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
