GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia senior attacker Josie Owen and Boston College freshman goalkeeper Emily Mata have earned Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse weekly awards. Owen was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Mata was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Owen, of Gibson Island, Md., totaled eight goals, four assists, six ground balls and eight draw controls in a two-win week for the Cavaliers that included a victory over No. 6 Duke. In the victory over James Madison, Owen totaled a career-high six goals and added an assist. Owen contributed to five of Virginia's nine second-half goals at Duke, including an assist on the game-winner. Virginia has home games against Old Dominion and Boston College this week.
Mata, of Severna Park, Md., had a standout week as part of back-to-back complete-game performances in net for Boston College, including a win over Harvard. On the week, Mata let up only 15 goals over two games, while accumulating 23 saves on 56 shots. Mata's 15 saves against North Carolina set a new career-best and accounted for the second lowest goal output of the season for the Tar Heels. Boston College will take the field next on Saturday at Virginia.
