GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland junior attacker Karri Ellen Johnson and sophomore midfielder Katie Schwarzmann have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet, respectively, for the period ending on Monday, Feb. 28.
Johnson scored five goals and added an assist to lead No. 1 Maryland to its first ACC win this season against No. 3 Duke, 18-11, last week. The junior from Annapolis, Md., moved into sixth all-time in career goals at Maryland and now has 160. In addition to aiding the Terps offensively, Johnson also notched three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers as the Terps won their fourth-straight against the Blue Devils. She has now tallied at least one point in 49 consecutive games – every one for which she has suited up for at Maryland
Schwarzmann coupled her third five-goal performance this season with a phenomenal defensive effort in the conference win Saturday. The sophomore from Sykesville, Md., who leads the Terps offensively with 18 goals this season, was steady on the defensive end of the field, racking up a game-high five ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers as Maryland won its 14 consecutive game. Schwarzmann also helped hold a Duke attack that was averaging over 18 goals per game heading into Saturday’s ACC showdown to only 11.
