GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina sophomore Abbey Friend and Virginia junior Kim Kolarik have earned Atlantic Coast Conference women’s lacrosse weekly awards. Friend was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Kolarik was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Friend, of Canadaigua, N.Y., scored four goals and gathered a ground ball in Carolina’s 16-7 win over No. 19 Albany, and then tallied five goals and one assist in Sunday’s win over No. 10 Vanderbilt. For the week, the sophomore attacker combined for nine goals and one assist as the third-ranked Tar Heels improved to 5-0 on the season. No. 2 North Carolina will host No. 7 Penn at 3 p.m. Saturday in Chapel Hill.
Kolarik, of Riva, Md., earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after guiding the Cavaliers to two victories. Highlighting the week was Kolarik’s performance against No. 12 Syracuse, where she made several big stops to hold the Orange scoreless over a 12-minute second-half span and led the Cavaliers to a 9-7 victory. No. 6 Virginia will take the field next on Friday at No. 3 Maryland.
