GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina junior attacker Abbey Friend and Maryland sophomore midfielder Brooke Griffin have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Co-Offensive Players of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. North Carolina sophomore midfielder Margaret Corzel has been recognized as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Friend scored three times on five shots in Friday’s 11-8 Tar Heel win over top-ranked Northwestern. After the Wildcats went on a 3-0 scoring run in less than two minutes to pull within two goals at 9-7, the native of Canandaigua, N.Y., responded with North Carolina’s last two goals to ice the victory.
Griffin tallied three goals in the first half to help spark No. 2 Maryland to an early 9-1 lead in its home opener Sunday against No. 4 Duke, as the Terrapins went on to beat the Blue Devils, 15-6. The midfielder from Annapolis, Md., added two assists for a game-high five points as Maryland upended a top-five team for the second straight week and picked up its first conference win of 2013.
Corzel had primary responsibility for marking Northwestern All-American attacker Erin Fitzgerald, limiting her to one goal on three shots with three turnovers in North Carolina’s 11-8 win over No. 1 Northwestern. The native of Berwyn, Pa., caused two turnovers and collected a ground ball, while hounding Fitzgerald throughout the Tar Heel victory.
