GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia senior Ainsley Baker and Maryland junior Iliana Sanza have earned Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse weekly awards. Baker was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Sanza was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Baker, of Corning, N.Y., earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring a career-high five goals in the Cavaliers' season-opening victory over No. 7 Loyola. With the Cavaliers holding a 6-5 halftime lead, Baker went on to score three unanswered goals to open the second half. Baker converted on five of her seven shots in the game. No. 10 Virginia will host Richmond at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Sanza, of Cockeysville, Md., earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after a pair of impressive performances that led a stingy Terrapin defense to two victories on the week including a 16-6 win at No. 17 Penn State. The Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List nominee racked up eight draw controls over two games, while also tallying four groundballs and a forced turnover. No. 2 Maryland will next take the field at 2 p.m. Saturday against No. 5 Duke.
