GREENSBORO, NC – Virginia’s Briana Mao, a sophomore from Folsolm, Calif., is the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for February after claiming first-place at the UCF Challenge, the ACC announced Thursday.
Mao led the Cavaliers to a team fifth-place finish at the UCF Challenge, which was played at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla., by shooting a four-under-par 212 for the tournament, taking first-place honors. Mao shot a 70-69-73, finishing first among a field of 99 players. It was the first career tournament win for Mao and her first round score of 70 was a career-best. She then followed that up with a second straight career-low with a 69 in the second round. As a team, UVa finished 5th overall with a 72-hole score of 879.
With the win, Mao became the fifth Virginia player to record at least one tournament win in the 10-year history of the Virginia women’s golf program.
Virginia will next be in action at the Darius Rucker Invitational, which will be held March 8-10 at the Long Cove Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Mao was chosen from a field of five ACC Women’s Golfer of the Month nominees, including Duke junior Laetitia Beck (Caesarea, Israel), Florida State senior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.), North Carolina freshman Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield, England), and NC State sophomore Augusta James (Bath, Ontario, Canada).
The ACC Women’s Golfer of the Month for February included tournaments played January 1, 2013 through February 27, 2013.
