GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland head field hockey coach Missy Meharg and North Carolina head field hockey coach Karen Shelton have been selected 2010 Dita/NFHCA Division I Regional Coaches of the Year, announced today by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Meharg, the Mid-Atlantic Region honoree, and Shelton, the South Region recipient, have combined to lead their squads to the last six national titles. Other regional winners included Penn State's Char Morett, Massachusetts' Justine Sowry, and Ohio State's Anne Wilkinson.

Meharg, in her 23rd year at the helm, guided the Terps to the program's seventh NCAA Field Hockey Championship last month, defeating North Carolina in the final, 3-2. It marked the Terps' fourth title in the past six years. Maryland also topped the Tar Heels in the ACC Championship, claiming its third-straight conference title and ninth overall. Meharg, who earned ACC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time in her career, led Maryland to a 23-1 overall mark and a perfect 5-0 record in league play in 2010. She has been named the NFHCA National Coach of the Year seven times and was last recognized in 2008.

The Terps spent four weeks ranked No. 1 in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, including the final three. The squad led the nation in five statistical categories, including scoring average (4.54), goals per game (4.67), winning percentage (.958), points per game (13.58), and assists per game (4.25).

Shelton, who just completed her 28th year at North Carolina, garnered South Region Coach of the Year accolades for the second consecutive season. She guided the Tar Heels to their second-straight appearance in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship title game, where they fell to Maryland in double overtime. North Carolina posted a 22-3 overall record, including a 4-1 mark in league play. All three of its losses came against Maryland. Shelton has been recognized as the NFHCA National Coach of the Year five times, including last season.

UNC was ranked No. 1 in the preseason Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll and spent seven weeks in the top spot before ending the season at No. 2. North Carolina led the conference and ranked in the top three nationally in two statistical categories, including goals against average (0.98) and shutouts per game (0.44).
