GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fifteen Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey student-athletes earned All-American honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association, the organization announced Monday. The total is the most for any conference in the nation, leading the eight from both the Big East and the Big Ten.
Of the 16-member first team, six are from ACC teams, three each from North Carolina and Maryland. There are five from the ACC on the second team, and four on the third team. In addition, two ACC players – Maryland’s Megan Frazer (Mid-Atlantic) and North Carolina’s Katelyn Falgowski (South) – earned NFHCA Division I Regional Players of the Year honors.
Duke, North Carolina, and national champion Maryland each had four players earn All-American recognition, tied for the most in the nation. Maryland’s Jemma Buckley, Jill Witmer, and Frazer all earned their second career honor, and Harriet Tibble earned her first.
North Carolina, the ACC Champion and runner up in the NCAA Championship, had four players recognized as Kelsey Kolojejchick (fourth), Falgowski (third), and Caitlin Van Sickle (second) all are repeat winners. Katie Ardrey picked up her first award as a member of the third team.
Duke, the ACC runner up, placed two players – Rhian Jones and Stefanie Fee – on the second team, and two more – Emmie Le Marchand and Samantha Nelson – on the third team. This is the third recognition for Jones.
Virginia’s Elly Buckley (second team) earned her second career recognition, and Wake Forest’s Anna Kozniuk, the 2011 ACC Freshman of the Year, was named to the third team. Boston College’s Maike de Jager earned her first-career honor, being named to the second team.
The 2011 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I National Player of the Year will be announced on Monday, Nov. 28th.
