GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland attacker Katie O’Donnell had two goals and an assist in each of Maryland’s two games last week and has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week
A senior from Blue Bell, Pa., O’Donnell had a hand in all six of Maryland’s goals on the week as the Terps (16-1, 5-0 ACC) earned victories against two teams ranked in the top 10. She currently leads the conference in goals, assists and points.
O’Donnell scored the Terps’ first goal against then-No. 7 American on Wednesday. The goal proved to be the game-winner as Maryland blanked the Eagles, 3-0.
Hosting then-No. 1 North Carolina in a pivotal conference matchup on Saturday, O’Donnell connected on a penalty corner in the seventh minute to give Maryland an early 1-0 advantage. Nearly six minutes later she scored again off a rebound after the UNC goalkeeper came out of the goal to stop the first shot.
The Tar Heels came back to tie the game in the second half, but O’Donnell assisted on a goal by Jemma Buckley with less than three minutes remaining to give the Terps the 3-2 victory. It marked UNC’s first loss of the season.
The ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Tuesday throughout the season. For more information on ACC field hockey visit http://www.theacc.com/sports/w-fieldh/acc-w-fieldh-body.html.
