GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina senior forward Elizabeth Stephens and Boston College senior forward Courtney Tavener have been named ACC Field Hockey Co-Players of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Tavener, a native of Winchester, Mass., tallied her first career hat trick in a 5-4 double-overtime victory at Virginia. She added an assist to the three goals, good for seven points and a new career high. After a scoreless first overtime period, Tavener took a pass, dribbled through two defenders and fired a shot for the game-winning goal.
The weekly award is the first for Tavener in her career. The Eagles return to action on Friday when they host the Duke Blue Devils.
Stephens, a native of St. Louis, Mo., notched the only goal and the game-winner in a double-overtime win over No. 9 Duke to improve No. 2 North Carolina to 8-1 on the year. After 85 minutes of scoreless play, the Tar Heels started the second overtime period man-down before Stephens got the ball in front of Duke keeper Samantha Nelson, took a shot that was saved, then gathered the rebound and shot again to give Carolina the win.
She also added a goal and assisted on the game-winning goal as North Carolina beat Davidson 5-0 on Sunday. The award is the first of her career.
North Carolina returns to action Friday when it travels to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest.
