GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina sophomore defender Samantha Travers and Maryland junior defender Ali McEvoy have been the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Co-Players of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Travers scored five goals over the weekend as No. 1 North Carolina shut out two opponents on the road. At Delaware on Friday, the Harare, Zimbabwe native scored two of the Tar Heels’ goals in a 6-0 win. On Sunday against Villanova in a neutral site game, she had a hat trick in a 10-0 North Carolina victory. In the two shutouts, the Tar Heel defense allowed only six shots and six penalty corners.
McEvoy led No. 3 Maryland to a 2-0 week with four goals and her first career hat trick, as well as her stellar performance on the defensive end. Against Dartmouth, McEvoy scored off a corner in the first two minutes of the game and added two more goals and one assist as the Terrpains rolled to a 6-0 win. In a 5-0 victory over No. 19 UMass, the native of Gilbertsville, Pa., struck off a penalty corner in the fourth minute. McEvoy also anchored Maryland’s defensive unit, which shut out both opponents and held them to a combined seven shots total in the 140 minutes played.
