Maryland's O'Donnell Claims League's First Weekly Field Hockey Honor Of 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland senior forward Katie O'Donnell has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week for her two-goal and three-assist performance in the Terrapins' two victories over the weekend.

A native of Blue Bell, Pa., the reigning ACC and National Player of the Year scored twice and assisted on three goals as No. 2 Maryland opened its season with back-to-back victories.

Facing No. 11 Drexel on its home turf, O'Donnell helped the Terrapins get on the board early. At just under six minutes into the game, O'Donnell made a breakaway pass to Janessa Pope, who scored to give Maryland a 1-0 advantage. O'Donnell increased the lead to two goals after sending a deflected penalty corner shot into the back of the net. It was her sole shot on goal in the game.

Drexel scored twice in the second half to make the score 3-2, but Maryland was awarded a penalty corner and took advantage. O'Donnell inserted the ball and Jemma Buckley scored, giving the Terrapins a two-goal lead. Maryland won by a final score of 4-2, marking the 13th consecutive year the Terrapins opened the season with a victory.

In the win against Villanova, O'Donnell connected on a penalty stroke just one and a half minutes into the game, giving Maryland a 1-0 lead. Her goal proved to be the game-winner as the Terrapins blanked the Wildcats 5-0. O'Donnell also registered an assist later in the game on a deflected penalty corner.

The ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Tuesday throughout the season. For more information on ACC field hockey visit
