GREENSBORO, N.C. – 2011 National Champion Maryland received three first place votes and is the preseason favorite to claim the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship according to a vote of the league’s six head coaches.

The Terrapins claimed 23 of a possible 25 points. Defending ACC Champion North Carolina was picked second with 22 points, ahead of Virginia with 15 points. Duke (14 points), Wake Forest (10 points), and Boston College (six points) round out the field.

Five different squads are represented on the preseason All-ACC team. Virginia leads the league with four players recognized. Maryland, North Carolina, and Wake Forest have two players apiece, and one Duke Blue Devil garnered accolades.

The 2012 All-ACC squad is headlined by all three individual award winners from last season. North Carolina’s Kelsey Kolojejchick, the 2011 Offensive Player of the Year, is joined by teammate Caitlin Van Sickle, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Wake Forest’s Anna Kozniuk was named the 2011 ACC Freshman of the Year.  Eight of the members on the preseason squad were also on the 2011 All-ACC team.

Wake Forest’s second representative is Lizzie Rae. Duke’s Emmie LeMarchand, Maryland’s Megan Frazer and Harriet Tibble were also recognized. Virginia student-athletes on the team are Elly Buckley, a member of the 2011 All-ACC squad, goalkeeper Jennifer Johnstone, plus Michelle Vittese and Paige Selenski, both of whom took a redshirt last season to prepare for the Olympics.

Maryland and North Carolina have combined to win the past seven national championships, with the two teams battling in the final game the past three years. The Tar Heels were victorious in 2009, and the Terrapins won the title in 2010 and 2011, both in overtime.  ACC teams have won the last 10 national championships.
