GREENSBORO, N.C. - The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced today its National Academic Squad, with 40 of the 692 selected student-athletes representing the Atlantic Coast Conference and its six field hockey squads. Student-athletes must have achieved a minimum 3.30 grade-point-average during the fall semester to be named to the National Academic Squad.
Leading all honorees were Boston College senior goalkeeper Kristine Stigas and Virginia senior defender Laura Elstein, both of whom are receiving the distinction for the fourth time. Elstein was also honored for her academic achievement during the Fall semester by the NCAA when it named her to the "Elite 88," a group of 88 student-athletes across Divisions I, II, and III who hold the highest GPA among all participants in each sport's national semifinals.
Among ACC teams, Duke led the league with 13 honorees, and was followed by 2009 NCAA runner-up Maryland with eight selections. Boston College, Virginia, and Wake Forest each had five picks, while 2009 NCAA champion North Carolina had four.
Seven of the ACC's 40 selections were named 2009 All-Americas by the NFHCA.
