Maryland's Harriet Tibble Named ACC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Feb. 22, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland junior defender Harriet Tibble has been named the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team.

A double major in Marketing and International Business, Tibble is the second Maryland field hockey player to earn the honor after Susie Rowe in 2008. She is the 12th Terrapin across all sports to be named an ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This is the second time on the All-ACC Academic team for the native of Surrey, England.

Tibble was named to the NFHCA All-American Second Team last season and has been named to the NFHCA All-MidAtlantic Region and All-ACC teams the past two years. She was also a member of two squads that won NCAA Championships.

All six ACC schools that compete in field hockey are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic Team, led by Duke with 10. Maryland and Virginia both have six apiece, North Carolina and Wake Forest have three players recognized, and Boston College has two.

The All-ACC Academic team includes eight student-athletes that earned All-America honors and 16 that were named to NFHCA Division I All-Region Teams.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
