Jan. 12, 2010

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Following a season in which she coached North Carolina to its sixth NCAA field hockey championship, Karen Shelton has been named the 2009 Division I National Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The award was announced on Friday at the NFHCA’s annual conference in Richmond, Va.

This marks the fifth time in her career and second time in the past three seasons that Shelton has been honored as the national coach of the year. The 2009 Tar Heels finished the year 20-2, beating previously-undefeated Maryland 3-2 in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Nov. 22 to claim the national crown.

The award is selected by voting of coaches who are members of the NFHCA. Shelton most recently won in 2007.
