Virginia Tech's Harrison Collects ACC Women's Basketball Player Of The Week Accolades

Dec. 21, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech junior guard Shanel Harrison earned Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for the period ending Dec. 19, while a pair of newcomers in Maryland guard Alyssa Thomas and Virginia Tech guard/forward Monet Tellier shared Rookie of the Week accolades.

The ACC's weekly accolades are voted on by the league's "Blue Ribbon Panel," which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives. The panelists will also vote on the league's postseason All-Conference teams for the 2010-11 season.

Harrison scored a career-high 25 points, including a career-best three treys, in the Hokies' come-from-behind 94-78 double-overtime win at William & Mary. The junior from Washington, D.C., hit a game-tying three-pointer with 3.2 seconds remaining in regulation to force the first extra period. Harrison finished the game on 11-of-14 field goal shooting, including a 3-of-4 three-point percentage.

Thomas led all scorers with 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field in Maryland's lone game of the week, a 79-49 victory at Delaware State. The rookie from Harrisburg, Pa., shot 75 percent from the foul line and helped the Terrapins dominate the inside game as the team outscored the Hornets 50-14 in the paint. Thomas has now scored in double-figures in 10 of the 11 games she has played in this season.

Tellier recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds in Virginia Tech's double-overtime victory at William & Mary. The newcomer from Charlotte, N.C., also tied career-high for assists and blocks. Tellier was one of three Tech players to achieve double-doubles at William & Mary after not having any in the previous nine games.

ACC women's basketball action continues tonight as four league teams welcome out-of-conference opponents, beginning with Maryland-Eastern Shore at Wake Forest and Virginia at James Madison at 7 p.m. ET.
