ATLANTA - Senior Alex Montgomery tallied her 12th career double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds, but the final additions to that line were arguably her biggest of the night. The Tacoma, Wash., native hit a three-pointer from the corner in front of her own bench with 12.6 seconds left to give Tech a 65-63 lead over the previously undefeated Northwestern Wildcats (6-1) in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
After Northwestern's Kendall Hackney missed an open three-point attempt with five seconds left, Montgomery grabbed her 11th and final rebound of the night, and was immediately fouled. The senior calmly stepped to the line and hit both free throws to ice the game for the Jackets.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - For the first time this season, NC State will arrive home victorious after a 73-57 dismantling off Illinois Wednesday night at Assembly Hall.
The game was part of the fourth installment of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Wolfpack women improved to 2-2 all-time with both wins over the Fighting Illini.
Having gone winless in its first four games away from Raleigh, NC State (4-4) led from opening tip to the final horn to grab a much needed win after dropping four of its last five outings.
Junior Bonae Holston led all scorers with 18 points.
Nine points right out of halftime gave NC State a 51-24 lead, squashing any ideas of a comeback from the Illini.
The lead grew to 31 points by the 13:37 mark after a Breezy Williams lay in made it 61-30.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) - Fourteenth-ranked Florida State sustained its first setback of the 2010-11 campaign with a 72-64 loss Wednesday night to No. 25 Michigan State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Despite cutting the MSU's (6-1) 12-point lead to just 64-62 with 1:14 left to play in the game, the Seminoles (6-1) would never get any closer and were ultimately done in by a 19-0 second-half Sparty run.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan came out of the gate on fire and never cooled, as it rolled to a 91-58 victory over Wake Forest Wednesday night in the 2010 Women's ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The win lifts Michigan over .500 at 4-3 for the season while the Deacons drop their second game of the year and fall to 5-2.
