GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Virginia senior forward Chelsea Shine and Maryland freshman guard Brene Moseley earned 2011-12 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Sunday, Nov. 20.
Shine keyed the Cavaliers upset of No. 3 Tennessee with an 18-point, nine-rebound performance, including a key bucket in overtime. The senior from Wayne, Pa., went 7-for-15 from the field, scored three points and grabbed three rebounds in the decisive overtime period. The UVa senior class of Shine and Ariana Moorer have been part of two upsets of Tennessee when the Lady Vols are ranked in the Top five (2008 & 2011). Shine averaged 8.7 rebounds per game through the Cavaliers' three wins on the week and just missed double-doubles with eight points and 10 boards at Providence and 18 points and nine rebounds vs. Tennessee.
Moseley averaged 20.0 points per game in the Terrapins' two wins last week. The rookie from Burtonsville, Md., dropped 26 on Towson Wednesday night, the most for a Maryland freshman since Kristi Toliver scored 28 vs. Utah in the Elite Eight in 2006. On the week, Moseley went 7-for-13 (.538) from outside the arc and dished out nine assists.
ACC women's basketball action continues tonight as Florida State and Virginia Tech welcome nonconference opponents Georgia State and William & Mary, respectively. Clemson takes to the road to face North Carolina A&T in other early season competition. All games tonight are slated for 7 p.m.
