Maryland's Thomas & Clemson's Dixon Earn ACC Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland sophomore forward Alyssa Thomas and Clemson freshman guard Nikki Dixon earned the first 2011-12 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.

Thomas led the Terrapins to a 2-0 record in the opening weekend of the 2011-12 season. The reigning ACC Rookie of the Year averaged 19.5 points per game and 11.0 boards per game in the Terps’ wins over No. 11 Georgetown and Loyola. Against the Hoyas, Thomas scored 19 off 7-of-19 shooting from the field and went 5-for-6 from the line. She grabbed 15 total rebounds against Georgetown, including 12 defensive, and had two steals. Against Loyola, Thomas had 20 points, seven boards, and went 8-for-13 from the foul line and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. In addition, she added four steals and two assists.

Dixon was Clemson’s leading scorer, starting both games and playing a total of 60 minutes for the Tigers in a 2-0 week. In her collegiate debut, Dixon had 21 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals on 7-of-14 shooting and a 6-of-7 mark at the line. The rookie from Alpharetta, Georgia, followed it up with a 4-of-7 night, which included three 3-pointers, for 11 points total. Defensively, Dixon was key in holding SC State to the lowest opponent field goal percentage in Clemson home game history (499 games).
