GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland senior forward Tianna Hawkins and North Carolina freshman forward Xylina McDaniel earned the first 2012-13 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
Hawkins began her senior season with a bang by posting back-to-back double-doubles in wins over Mount St. Mary’s (88-47) and Loyola (Md.) (88-45), while becoming the 28th player in Maryland women’s basketball history to break the 1,000-point mark on Nov. 9 versus the Mount. In the first weekend of play, she averaged 25.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and shot over 77 percent from the field. The Clinton, Md., native scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in her season debut against Mount St. Mary’s, and followed that performance up with a career-high 33 points, including 26 in the first half, and 13 rebounds against Greyhounds.
The Player of the Week honor is the third of Hawkins’ career. She twice earned the honor during the 2011-12 season.
McDaniel averaged 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in her first two collegiate games. The rookie from Columbia, S.C., led the Tar Heels with 18 points and 12 rebounds for her first career double-double in a 70-59 season-opening win over Davidson in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT. McDaniel added seven points and five rebounds in 17 minutes in a 62-58 win over Duquesne to help the Tar Heels advance to the Preseason WNIT Semifinals.
ACC women’s basketball action continues tonight as Virginia plays at Penn, and Richmond hosts Miami. Both games tip-off at 7 p.m.
