GREENSBORO, N.C. -- NC State senior Marissa Kastanek has been named the recipient of the fifth annual Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year Award and headlines the 2012-13 All-ACC Women's Basketball Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. Kastanek earns the honor for the second straight season and is the second women's basketball player to earn repeat honors, joining Duke's Jasmine Thomas who did so in 2010 and 2011.
The native of Lincoln, Neb., ranks second on the Wolfpack in scoring at 12.6 points per game. She also ranks fifth in the ACC with 2.1 3-pointers per game, while her 37.6 percent shooting from downtown is eighth in the league.
She ranks 10th in school history with 1,607 career points, and her 235 three-pointers are second in the Wolfpack record book. Kastanek is also a standout in the classroom. The four-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree has a 4.0 grade point average while majoring in psychology with minors in coaching education, sport science and Spanish.
A total of 15 student-athletes from eight of the league's 12 schools were named to the All-ACC Women's Basketball Academic Team. Duke led for the fifth consecutive year with five selections, followed by NC State with three and Maryland with two. Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami and Virginia Tech each had one representative on the team.
ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. The award is based 60 percent on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishment.
To be eligible for consideration for the academic squad, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.
