GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke sophomore center Elizabeth Williams has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and heads up the sport's All-ACC Defensive Team as selected by the Head Coaches and announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
In addition to Williams, honorees on the 2013 All-ACC Defensive Team include Duke junior guard Chlesea Gray, Georgia Tech junior guard Tyaunna Marshall, Miami senior forward Morgan Stroman and North Carolina senior center Waltiea Rolle.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Williams leads the ACC with 83 blocked shots (2.9 per game), and her inside presence keyed a Duke defense that has held ACC opponents to an ACC-low 51.5 points per game and also leads in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 33.5 percent shooting from the floor per game. Williams has blocked at least one shot in 62 consecutive games since arriving at Duke.
The 36th Annual ACC Women's Basketball Tournament tips off at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 7, and will conclude with a 2 p.m. championship contest on Sunday, March 10. The title game will be televised on ESPN2. All 10 games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be broadcast on the league's regional sports network (RSN). The entire tournament can also be seen on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
