GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami senior center Shawnice “Pepper” Wilson and Duke freshman guard Alexis Jones have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Wilson closed out the regular season with arguably the best week of her career. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native led Miami to its first-ever win over No. 5/4 Duke on Feb. 28 with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Ranked No. 4 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll, Duke is the highest ranked opponent Miami has defeated in program history. Wilson followed up that performance with 11 points and eight rebounds in a 64-46 win at Virginia Tech in the regular season finale to finish the week averaging 13.5 points and 10 rebounds.
Jones averaged 17.5 points and 5.0 assists in a 1-1 week for the Blue Devils, including a career-high 22 points in a 65-58 win over No. 15/17 North Carolina on March 3. Jones was clutch from the free throw line as she drained 11 straight in the regular season finale on her way to finishing with a career-high 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. She also added four assists and one steal while running the offense against the Tar Heels.
Jones scored 13 points and added six assists and five rebounds in Duke’s loss at Miami on Feb. 28. It is the second straight week Jones has earned Rookie of the Week honors and third time overall.
The 2013 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament gets underway on Thursday, March 7. First round action begins at 11 a.m., with No. 5 seed Miami taking on No. 12 seed Virginia Tech.
