ACC Announces 2010-11 All-ACC Women's Basketball Academic Team #ACCwbb

March 4, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke senior Jasmine Thomas has been named recipient of the third annual Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year Award and headlines the 2010-11 All-ACC Women’s Basketball Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. This marks the second-straight year that Thomas has been honored with the award.

A veteran guard from Fairfax, Va., Thomas is a candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy, Naismith, and John R. Wooden Award for National Player of the Year. She has guided the eighth-ranked Blue Devils to 26-3 overall record, including a 12-2 mark in the ACC, en route to a share of their second-straight conference regular-season title and 10th overall. Thomas is currently averaging 14.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.5 steals. This season she became just the fourth player in program history to register more than 1,300 points, 400 rebounds, 400 assists, 200 steals, and 50 blocked shots in her career. Last month the sociology major was named second team Capital One Academic All-America, becoming the first two-time Academic All-America in Duke women’s basketball history.

ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. The award is based 60 percent on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishment.

A total of 18 student-athletes from 10 of the league’s 12 schools were named to the All-ACC Women’s Basketball Academic Team. Duke led for the third consecutive year with five selections, followed by NC State and Virginia with three apiece. Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech each had one.

To be eligible for consideration for the academic squad, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.
