GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Florida State senior guard Christian Hunnicutt was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year and headlines the five-player All-ACC Defensive team, announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Hunnicutt was selected by the league's 12 women's basketball head coaches and is the first Seminole student-athlete to garner the award since the honor was first put into place for the 2004-05 season.
Hunnicutt, Florida State's top perimeter defender, has started all but one game for the Seminoles, in which she sat out due to a knee injury. The veteran from Jonesboro, Ga., averages 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, and is second on the team in assists (106). Hunnicutt owns a 3.8 assist/turnover ratio, a mark good for eighth among ACC players. In addition, she has held her defensive assignments in ACC wins to 18-for-84 shooting.
Also named to the 2010-11 All-ACC Defensive Team were Miami junior guard Shenise Johnson, Georgia Tech senior guard/forward Alex Montgomery, North Carolina sophomore forward/center Waltiea Rolle and Duke senior guard Jasmine Thomas. Johnson is the lone repeat All-Defensive selection.
The 34th Annual ACC Women's Basketball Tournament tips off at approximately 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 3, and will conclude with a 1 p.m. championship contest on Sunday, March 6. The title game, as well as the semifinals, will be broadcast by Fox Sports Net (FSN) in HD, while the 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. games on Thursday, March 3, and Friday, March 4, will be televised on the league's regional package (RSN).
