March 2, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com)—NC State’s Marissa Kastanek was named the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Year, announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Kastanek was chosen by a vote of 42 members of the Blue Ribbon Panel, a group that includes selected media as well as all 12 women’s basketball coaches, to become only the third Wolfpack freshman to garner the award and first since Katie Smrcka-Duffy in 1997.

Kastanek started in 28 of NC State’s 29 games this season, averaging 10.7 points and 26.7 minutes per game, ranking third and second on the squads, respectively. The Lincoln, Neb., native made 39.9 percent (109-of-273) of her shots, including 35.3 percent (53-of-150) from 3-point range, the ninth-best mark in the ACC, in helping the Pack to a 17-12 overall record and a sixth-place finish in the league standings with a 7-7 conference record. Additionally, Kastanek averaged 3.6 rebounds per game while dishing out 43 assists and recording 40 steals.

Joining Kastanek on the ACC All-Freshman Team is Duke center Allison Vernerey, Florida State forward Chasity Clayton, Maryland freshman Diandra Tchatchouang, and Wake Forest forward Sandra Garcia. Vernerey is the first Blue Devil to be named ACC All-Freshman since Abby Waner in 2006, while Garcia is the first Demon Deacons to collect the award since Mekia Valentine in 2007.

The 33rd Annual ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will begin on Thursday, March 4 at the Greensboro Coliseum and conclude on Sunday, March 7 with a 1 p.m. championship game.
