GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State junior guard Courtney Ward and Maryland freshman forward earned the final 2009-10 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors for the period ending Feb. 28. The honor is the first for Ward this season, while it marks the third for Tchatchouang.
Ward averaged 20.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game in a 3-0 week for the eighth-ranked Florida State Seminoles, including a 94-61 win over Maryland to secure a share of the ACC regular-season title with a 12-2 conference record. The junior posted 29 points at Virginia earlier in the week, the most by a Seminole since Britany Miller scored 29 against Wake Forest in 2007. The 29 points were nearly half of the FSU total output at UVa. In addition, Ward shot 71.0 percent from the field (22-31) on the week and 72.2 percent from 3-point range (13-18). The Montgomery, Ala., native has scored in double digits in four straight games enter the ACC Tournament and in 11-of-14 league contests.
Ward currently leads the league in assists and ranks among the top 25 scorers in the ACC. She is one of three players in the ACC with a 40 percent or better 3-point shooting percentage, and entered the week ranked 13th in the country in assists per game.
Tchatchouang hit over 50 percent of her shots over two games this week on 16-of-30 shooting (.533). The rookie continues to lead all ACC freshmen in scoring and recorded her third 20-point performance with a game-high 23 against Florida State, just two shy from her career-best. The La Courneuve, France, native made a career-high 10 field goals against the Seminoles, three of which came from beyond the arc - the most she’s had since early December. In addition, Tchatchouang tied her career-high in attempted field goals with 17 against Florida State, while her two blocks against FSU gave her 41 in her career, solidifying her spot in the Maryland freshmen record books in blocks.
