GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke center Elizabeth Williams was named the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year and leads this year’s ACC All-Freshmen team, as announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Williams was chosen by a vote of the Blue Ribbon Panel, a group that includes selected media as well as all 12 ACC women’s basketball coaches. She is the fourth Blue Devil to garner Rookie of the Year honors and the first since Alana Beard did so in 2001.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Williams led Duke with 14.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Her 102 blocked shots lead the conference and are the most ever by a Duke freshman. Williams earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors a record-tying nine times while pacing Duke to a 24-4 overall record and the top seed in this week’s ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament. She is just the third freshman in conference history to earn first-team All-ACC honors.
Nikki Dixon led Clemson with 12.4 points per game and joined Williams on the ACC All-Freshmen Team. Also named to the squad was a trio of guards – North Carolina’s Brittany Rountree, Maryland’s Brene Moseley and Georgia Tech’s Sydney Wallace. Dixon is the first Clemson freshman to earn All-ACC Freshman accolades since a pair of Lady Tigers (Christy Brown and LeLe Hardy) in 2007. Rountree is the first Tar Heel named to the All-Freshman team since Cetera DeGraffenreid in 2008. Moseley gives the Terrapins a representative on the All-Freshman team for the fourth consecutive year, while Wallace follows her backcourt mate Tyaunna Marshall to give Georgia Tech All-Freshman honorees in back-to-back years.
The 35th Annual ACC Women's Basketball Tournament tips off at approximately 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 1, and will conclude with a 2 p.m. championship contest on Sunday, March 4. The title game will be televised on ESPN2, and Saturday’s semifinals can be seen on ESPNU. All eight games on Thursday and Friday will be broadcast on the league’s regional sports network (RSN). The entire tournament can also be seen on ESPN3.
The Thursday (March 1) and Friday (March 2) games at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. will be available on satellite radio via Sirius 92. The Saturday (March 3) semifinal games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., as well as the 2 p.m. championship game on Sunday (March 4) will be carried on Sirius 136/XM 195.
