GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech junior guard Tyaunna Marshall and Duke freshman guard Alexis Jones have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Marshall averaged 32 points and eight rebounds to lead Georgia Tech to a 2-0 week. The junior from Upper Marlboro, Md., began the week with her eighth double-double of the season, recording 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets over Wake Forest, 82-64. She followed that performance up with a career-high 37 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals in Georgia Tech’s come-from-behind win against Miami on Feb. 25. Marshall grabbed two steals and scored two layups to tie the score and give Tech the lead in the final 38 seconds against the Hurricanes. Her 37 points are an ACC season-high and most by a Yellow Jacket since the 1999 season.
The Player of the Week honor is Marshall’s third of the season.
Jones earned her second ACC Rookie of the Week honor following her performance at No. 8/8 Maryland on Feb. 24. The freshman from Irving, Texas, registered a near triple-double with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in the Blue Devils’ 75-59 win over the Terps that gave them their fourth straight ACC regular season title. Jones averaged 10.5 points, 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in Duke’s back-to-back wins over ranked foes where she assumed point guard duties after the Blue Devils lost Chelsea Gray to injury.
ACC women’s basketball action continues tonight, with Virginia hosting Wake Forest. All 12 teams will finish up the regular season with games on Thursday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 3. The 2013 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament begins on Thursday, March 7 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
