TOWSON, Md. (GoPack.com) - Marissa Kastanek of the NC State women's basketball team has been selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's Basketball first team on Thursday, while teammate Kody Burke is named to the third team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
For the second-consecutive year, NC State is the only Division I program to have two student-athletes selected as Academic All-Americans. Kastanek was a 2012 second team selection, while Burke was named to the third team last season.
Kastanek, from Lincoln, Neb., joins Jennifer Howard as the only first team Academic All-America selections in Wolfpack women history. Howard was selected in 1996 and 1997.
A senior psychology major with a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average, Kastanek was a preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection this is averaging 13.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 39.9 percent from three-point range, fifth in the ACC. Kastanek is tied for 10th in school history with 1,569 career points.
She ranks 15th in ACC history with 228 career three-pointers, and also among the top-25 players in league history in both free throw and three-point shooting percentage.
Burke, who hails from Northridge, Calif., owns a 3.92 GPA as a business administration major. She leads the Pack with 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. Those figures rank ninth, 14th and 3rd, respectively in the ACC this season.
Her 155 career blocks is fourth in program history.
Both were first team All-Region selections, thus qualified as candidates for selection to the Academic All-American team.
