GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - North Carolina senior center Chay Shegog and Clemson freshman guard/forward Nikki Dixon earned Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 5.
Shegog scored a game-high 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor to help North Carolina beat Virginia, 64-56, the fifth consecutive win for the Tar Heels. She also grabbed five rebounds and held Virginia's starting front line of Chelsea Shine and Simone Egwu to just eight points on 2-of-6 shooting. The Stafford, Va., native reached 20 points for the ninth time this season and double figures for the 19th time in 22 games.
Dixon averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in a pair of road games within 48 hours last week, a win at Virginia Tech and a loss at No. 7 Miami. Against the Hokies, she scored 19 points, 13 of which came after she received two stitches in her forehead for a cut. The native of Alpharetta, Ga., played 72 of a possible 85 minutes in the two games, and hit several big shots in the win in Blacksburg, including a key and-one in overtime. It is her second straight Rookie of the Week honor and third of the season.
ACC women's basketball action continues tonight with two top-25 games. No. 22 Georgia Tech hosts No. 8 Maryland on RSN and No. 23 North Carolina and No. 5 Duke face off in Durham on ESPN2. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
