GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech junior guard Tyaunna Marshall and North Carolina freshman forward Xylina McDaniel have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Marshall earned Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after averaging a double-double leading Georgia Tech to a pair of wins over Wake Forest and at Virginia. Marshall paced Tech with 26.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field. In the Yellow Jackets’ overtime win against Wake Forest, Marshall tied her career-high with 28 points and set a career-high with 17 rebounds and seven assists. Three days later at Virginia, Marshall posted her sixth 20-plus point game of the season, scoring 25 and adding 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists. She made a clutch steal and scored the go-ahead layup with 15.3 seconds left to give Georgia Tech its second ACC road win of the season.
McDaniel earned her league-leading fifth ACC Rookie of the Week honor of the season after averaging 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in North Carolina’s 1-1 week, which included a win over No. 20/21 Florida State. McDaniel was key to the Tar Heels’ win over the Seminoles, scoring 15-second half points and finishing with 19 points to lead all scorers. McDaniel also came up big in the second half against No. 5/4 Duke and scored all 12 of her points in the second half. The Columbia, S.C., native leads all ACC freshmen in scoring, rebounding and steals.
