Virginia Tech's Biggs and NC State's Kastanek Earn Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

Jan. 18, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech senior guard Lindsay Biggs and NC State freshman guard Marissa Kastanek earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors for the period ending Jan. 17. Biggs led the Hokies to an impressive 79-64 victory over 10th-ranked North Carolina in the school’s conference home opener at Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies, winless against ranked teams since early 2006 and winless against preseason ACC favorite North Carolina since 1984, pulled off one for the memories on Jan. 14. Not only was the win just the squad’s third all-time against the Tar Heels, but it was also their first win over a top-10 team since they beat Duke on Nov. 15, 1998. In fact, it was just Tech’s fourth win all-time over a top-10 team, and the previous three all came by seven points or less.

Biggs led four Virginia Tech players in double figures in the upset win as the veteran from Midlothian, Va. keyed an early 9-0 run with two treys and a two-point basket, which turned a 17-10 deficit into a 19-17 lead. Biggs, who ranks fourth in the ACC in 3-point field goals made, finished the game on 8-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Marissa Kastanek Kastanek scored a team-high 18 points in an upset opportunity of No. 16 Florida State on Sunday, but eventually fell 74-71 after holding an eight-point lead with less than five minutes to play. The rookie from Lincoln, Neb., finished the game with four 3-pointers as part of 7-of-12 shooting. Kastanek currently leads all league freshmen in treys made as she averages 1.7 per game and has made 31 three-pointers in 18 games thus far this season.

ACC women’s basketball action continues tonight: Virginia Tech welcomes in-state rival Virginia to Blacksburg at 5 p.m., while No. 7 Duke hosts No. 1 Connecticut at 7 p.m. ET. The ACC match-up of the Hokies and Cavaliers will be televised on the league’s regional sports network, and the Blue Devils and Huskies will battle on ESPN2.
