GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech senior center Sasha Goodlett and Duke freshman center Elizabeth Williams earned 2011-12 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 15.
Goodlett averaged a double-double (21.3 points and 10.7 rebounds) in three games as Georgia Tech went 2-1. She shot 41.7 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line. In a loss to 13th-ranked Miami, Goodlett recorded her fourth double-double of the year with a team-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, tied for game-high honors with 10 rebounds, and matched her career-high with four assists. Goodlett follow that performance with 19 points, six boards and a game-high three blocks against Wake Forest. In the week’s finale at Boston College, she finished with career- and game-highs of 26 points and 16 rebounds. The Bolton, Miss., native was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line in the first half against the Eagles and had her fifth double-double of the year by intermission. Her 16 rebounds at BC are the most by a Yellow Jacket this season.
Williams averaged 19.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in leading Duke to league victories over Florida State and Virginia Tech. She also hit 58.3 percent of her field goals and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line. Williams and the Blue Devils won both league games in a span of three days. At Virginia Tech to close the week, Williams had a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and one assist in only 25 minutes. She hit a career-high 10 free throws and attempted a career high 12 from the charity stripe. Against Florida State, Williams had 18 points, eight rebounds, one block and three steals in 35 minutes. With her 61 blocks on the season, Williams already ranks eighth on the ACC single-season blocks list after registering five on the week. This is her second consecutive weekly award and fifth overall.
ACC women’s basketball action continues tonight as three league teams hit the court. North Carolina takes on Connecticut on ESPN2 at 7:00 p.m., Wake Forest hosts NC State at 6:30 on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network, and Virginia travels to Maryland at 8:30, also on RSN.
