GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke junior guard Chelsea Gray and North Carolina freshman forward Xylina McDaniel have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Gray became the third player in ACC history to register two triple-doubles in a career on Jan. 6 at Boston College with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in 33 minutes of action. She joins Dawn Staley (Virginia) and Tynesha Lewis (NC State) with two career triple-doubles. Her 10 assists marked the second time this season she has recorded double-figure assists and was the sixth time in her career. Gray averaged 19 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals, while shooting 52 percent from the floor and a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe in a 2-0 week for Duke, which remains the only undefeated team in NCAA Division I. Gray scored 20 points to go along with six rebounds, two steals and two assists in the Blue Devils’ win at NC State. The Player of the Week honor is the third of her career and first of the season.
McDaniel earned her league-leading fourth ACC Rookie of the Week honor of the season after averaging 10 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in North Carolina’s 2-0 week, which included a win over No. 8/8 Maryland. Against the Maryland, she helped hold the Terps to an ACC season low 57 points and a 31.9 field goal shooting percentage. She led the Tar Heels with a team-high 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals in a 48-45 win against Virginia Tech.
ACC women’s basketball action continues Thursday with all 12 teams in action.
