Maryland's Thomas & North Carolina's Rountree Earn ACC Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. ( – Maryland sophomore forward Alyssa Thomas and North Carolina freshman guard Brittany Rountree earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 1.

Thomas averaged 17.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game last week, as she helped lead Maryland to another Terrapin Classic Championship and a win over No. 19 Delaware. The 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year's performance also earned her the Tournament MVP honor. Thomas shot 57.7 percent from the field and nailed a three-pointer vs. the Blue Hens. Between the two games, the Harrisburg, Pa., native dished six assists, while committing just two turnovers. Against the Blue Hens, she scored 17 points in the first half.

Rountree continued her strong play with 13.0 points, 3.5 steals, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in a pair of wins for the Tar Heels. The rookie from Jacksonville, Fla., scored a game-high 15 points against Savannah State, and helped the Tar Heels hold Savannah State to 21 points - the lowest total ever for a Carolina opponent. Rountree then tallied 11 points, four steals, three assists, three rebounds and just one turnover against NC Central.

ACC women’s basketball action continues tonight as 10 league teams tip-off conference play. Duke, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina and NC State all host ACC opponents at 7 pm.., while Boston College welcomes Central Conn. State at 7 p.m. or follow on Twitter @accwbb-
