GREENSBORO. N.C. – Six Atlantic Coast Conference wrestlers were included on the 2009-10 National Wrestling Coaches Association's 2009-10 All-Academic Team announced Wednesday.
Duke senior John Barone and sophomore Peter Terrezza, Maryland seniors Hudson Taylor and James Knox, North Carolina senior Jeremy Shaw and Virginia senior Ross Gitomer were named to the squad.
All six were also named to the 2009-10 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team earlier this spring, with Maryland’s Taylor earning the sport’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor. Duke’s Barone received the honor in 2009.
To qualify for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, and either been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule – and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is to have a 3.0 GPA and be an NCAA All-American.
In addition, Duke ranked fourth among the NWCA’s Top 30 All-Academic teams, while Virginia earned a No. 24 ranking. For teams to be eligible for consideration, the team GPA is comprised of 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
In all, 74 individuals representing 45 schools were honored on the 2009-10 All-Academic Team, and all 11 Division I wrestling conferences were represented among the Top 30 teams.
