GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Virginia's Matt Snyder has been named the 2012-13 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season and heads up the sport's All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
Eight of the student-athletes named to the 18-member 2012-13 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team earned spots on the squad on at least one previous occasion. This year's team includes six student-athletes that also earned All-ACC team honors in 2013.
Snyder, a Kinesiology major from Lewistown, Pa., is a four-time All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team honoree who plans to attend medical school after completing his master's degree. Snyder earned a 2013 ACC Postgraduate Scholarship (the only wrestler in the conference honored) and placed on Virginia's honor roll for the 2012 fall semester.
Snyder was a 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championship qualifier and finished one win shy of All-America status by reaching the tournament's round of 12. A third-place finisher in the ACC Championship's competitive 125-pound weight class, Snyder was ranked eighth nationally in both the final NCAA Coaches rankings and the RPI. He finished with a 22-9 record this past season and ended his career as Virginia's ninth-ranked wrestler in total wins with 99. Snyder's 32 recorded falls rank third in program history.
Duke leads all schools with six student-athletes on the 2012-13 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team. Five wrestlers from Virginia were honored.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a minimum 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
