GREENSBORO, N.C. - A total of 28 wrestlers from the Atlantic Coast Conference - including 10 that are nationally-seeded in their weight classes - are scheduled to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships this week at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
The three-day event, which opens Thursday and continues through Saturday evening, will see 33 wrestlers compete for individual titles in their respective weight classes. A national team champion, determined by cumulative scoring, will also be crowned.
The ACC contingent includes Maryland’s Christian Boley, the No. 4 seed at 197 pounds, while Virginia Tech boasts a pair of No. 6 seeds in Devin Carter (133) and ACC Championship Most Valuable Wrestler Pete Yates (165). Virginia’s Nick Nelson is seeded seventh at 141 pounds, and Maryland’s Josh Asper is No. 7 at 165.
No. 8 seeds include NC State’s Darrius Little at 141 pounds and Maryland’s Spencer Myers at 285. Virginia’s Matt Snyder is seeded 11th at 125, while Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock holds a No. 12 seed at 174 and Virginia’s Jon Fausey a No. 12 at 184 pounds.
Carter, Yates, Nelson, Asper, Little, Myers, Snyder and Fausey all competed in the 2011 NCAA Championships, with Maryland’s Asper and Myers earning All-America honors with sixth-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Sixteen ACC wrestlers have earned All-America honors over the last three seasons.
Other ACC wrestlers in this year's Championship that also competed in 2011 include Maryland’s Kyle John and North Carolina’s Corey Mock at 157 pounds.
For the second straight year, ESPN, ESPNU and ESPN3.com will combine to air all six rounds of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship. All six sessions will be streamed on ESPN3.com, which will provide live mat-by-mat coverage of the championships. For individual links to each mat's live stream, click the link at the top of the page. Both of Friday's sessions and Saturday's first session will be broadcast live on ESPNU, while Saturday's second session, featuring the championship bouts, will be shown on ESPN.
