GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Maryland 125-pound junior Shane Gentry and Virginia 141-pound sophomore Joe Spisak have been Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week following their performances in last Friday night’s conference dual match between teams.
In a rematch of the 2012 ACC Championship’s 125-pound title bout, Gentry scored a takedown and a two-point near fall as time expired to knock off Virginia’s eighth-ranked Matt Snyder. Trailing 2-0 and facing a 2:48 riding time deficit in the third period, Gentry freed himself as Snyder hung off his back to score the takedown with eight seconds remaining, then gained leverage and turned Snyder for a 2-point near fall as time expired. Gentry, of Stafford, Va., improved to 15-8 on the year. Snyder was the third straight top-10 opponent Gentry has faced as a competitor in the ACC’s talent-filled 125-pound class.
Spisak, meanwhile, scored the key bonus points in Virginia’s 21-19 dual team win at Maryland. Spisak, of Boiling Springs, Pa., recorded a quick pin over the Terps’ Shane Arechiga at 141 pounds in the match’s first bout, giving the Cavaliers a wave of momentum that sent them out to an early 18-0 lead. While the teams split the 10 weight classes, Spisak’s bonus points were vital as Virginia scored its first dual win in College Park since 2005 and clinched second place in the ACC regular-season standings.
