GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia junior Jedd Moore has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after his upset win over a nationally-ranked opponent helped the Cavaliers defeat previously unbeaten Maryland and clinch a share of the ACC regular-season title for the first time since 2006.
Moore’s 5-3 decision over 11th-ranked Kyle John in the 157-pound weight class helped propel No. 22 Virginia to a 22-14 team win over the 13th-ranked Terps. With the victory, the Cavaliers defeated their highest-ranked opponent ever in a dual meet.
Moore, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, scored a takedown midway through the final period, then built up 1:27 in riding time to secure the extra point as he downed John. The victory gave the Cavaliers a 16-0 advantage over the Terrapins, who entered the match with a 13-0 overall record. Moore improved to 16-5 for the season. Virginia, which snapped a string of five straight dual losses to Maryland, improved to 7-1 overall and wrapped up ACC competition with a 4-1 mark.
